Julez — Back to First Street

Back to First Street, blues singer Julez’s debut album, does such a good job of being a young 20-something woman that I felt shivers. At times brash, ambitious, anxious, and self-doubting, Back to First Street, will take you back to a time period you feel nostalgic for as often as you wish you could forget it. Julez’s fancy fretwork will make it all go down smooth, though.

Julez’s voice will also capture your attention, calling to mind the strongminded women who populated the airwaves in the late 80s and early 90s, but with an added touch of self-awareness. She also pays a few sly tributes to her forebears: “Myself” has strong echoes of “Sympathy for the Devil,” perhaps hinting at her self-image even as she vies for redemption. Back to First Street is an exciting start for a promising artist.
